Happy
2011!
I know all of you have exciting and ambitious plans for your
organizations in the coming months. We hope you will share your ideas and
results with all of us through the wide variety of communication
opportunities available to each of you through the League.
♫ Network with your volunteer colleagues on all topics
by joining the
discussion group. The e-discussions are ongoing--you may
participate in the discussion or just read for information. (To sign up,
see “Networking Via the Net: Email Discussion Group” below.)
♫ Read about volunteer projects at goldbookonline.org.
We
encourage you to submit your projects as they are completed
throughout the year. You will find the forms for submission on the
website. This form can also serve as a guide for your organization’s
final report. Projects submitted now through September 1, 2011 will
be judged for the 2012 Conference.
♫ Budget now
to attend the National Conference in the Twin Cities,
June 6–10, 2011. Plan to arrive Monday to begin your networking
for the week. We will offer a special afternoon session at no
additional expense to you and the very popular Dine-Arounds that
evening. Watch the League’s website, americanorchestras.org,
for
Conference updates and hotel information beginning in February.
♫ Gather your
fundraising chairs and leadership to watch the
Volunteer Fundraising Webinar. This webinar offers
several
ideas for planning and implementing many types of fundraisers.

Networking Via the Net:
Email Discussion Group
|
|
A great service and a valuable
tool for volunteers is the League’s email discussion group. This provides
the ultimate forum for sharing information and ideas with orchestra
volunteer leadership from around the nation. It is easy, free, and
requires only as much time as you wish to give.
Questions may be posed by any member, at any time and any member may
reply. Everyone in the group receives all the correspondence submitted,
whether or not they participate directly in the discussion.
This is a great way for you to:
- Connect with other
orchestra volunteer leaders nationwide.
- Seek answers to questions
about any facet of orchestra volunteerism.
- Help out other orchestra
volunteer organizations by sharing your group’s best practices and
knowledge.
We hope you will take full advantage of this service and encourage other
members of your organization’s leadership to join as well. Join today by
emailing Meghan Whitbeck, senior associate for meetings, advertising, and
volunteer services, at

Join Us in the Twin Cities!
|
|
|
|
Volunteer Council members
take a break from their annual Fall planning meeting to visit one of
Minneapolis’s loveliest attractions - the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.
|
Your
Volunteer Council is actively planning and will be presenting a
stimulating, informative, and productive program at the League’s upcoming
National Conference, June 6–10, 2011.
Each year at Conference, the volunteer-oriented sessions are designed to
address topical issues and opportunities to help symphony volunteers
become more energized, creative, and committed at planning their current
and ongoing programs and events.
Attendees participate in imaginative, relevant, and knowledgeable
presentations and workshops. Projects from orchestra volunteer groups
around the nation in a variety of categories are presented in two
formats: Awards of Excellence PowerPoint presentations and Roundtables.
Other Conference benefits include tremendous networking opportunities to
learn, share, and explore the current issues facing all symphony
volunteer organizations today.
This year attendees will also have the chance to attend the concerts of
two outstanding symphony orchestras—the Minnesota Orchestra and The Saint
Paul Chamber Orchestra.Begin planning now to attend the League’s National
Conference—it will definitely reward you and your volunteer organization
many times over!

Mentoring Circle: The Next
Step in League Learning
|
|
Knowing
how invested you are in your orchestra’s success, we want to personally
invite you to take part in the next step of the League’s learning
opportunities.
Beginning in February, we will be offering a series of six monthly,
90-minute discussions via telephone designed specifically for new
volunteer presidents and president-elects.
This Mentoring Circle is a unique opportunity to connect with other
orchestra volunteer presidents and presidents-elects who have the same
questions and are facing similar situations as you.
Facilitated by Heather Moore, League of American Orchestras Volunteer
Council President former president of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League,
this guided peer-to-peer learning offers networking, sharing, and
personal insight from an experienced volunteer president. The sessions
will also include guest experts on various topics.
Here’s
what a past participant says about their Mentoring Circle: “The size of the Mentoring
Circle makes it easy for everyone to participate in the discussions, yet
still learn from others and their experiences. Topics were timely,
useful, and covered a broad range of issues. I wouldn’t change anything.”
For
more information or to register for this Mentoring Circle by February 4,
please click here. For more information about the League or
other opportunities available to you through your orchestra’s membership,
visit americanorchestras.org.

Orchestras Feeding America 2011: The
Drive is On
|
|
Now in its third year,
Orchestras Feeding America is the single largest orchestra project
serving communities nationwide. In the last two years, more than 250
orchestras from all 50 states have collected over 300,000 pounds of food
in support of this effort. As volunteers invested in your respective
orchestras, we hope you will encourage your orchestra to join in this
year’s drive.
March is the official Orchestras Feeding America month, but we encourage
any orchestras conducting food drives over the summer or holiday season
to participate and add to the 2011 total.
If you have any questions about the 2011 Orchestras Feeding America food
drive, contact Margaret Jordan at
