Video submission guidelines

CONDUCTOR VIDEOTAPE/DVD SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

These guidelines are suggested for conductors who submit videotapes or DVDs to apply for League programs. Their use will save the time of the viewer and enhance the value of the submitted tape.

While we understand that applicants may not have complete control over all elements involved in producing your video, we urge you to fulfill as many of these guidelines as possible. With the increasing number of applications, video review time is limited -- in short, a well-presented video makes a stronger application.

Videotapes:
Use a new videotape (standard VHS format required).   Include your name and printed log of excerpts with timings on both the videotape and the videotape cover.

DVDs:
DVDs should be clearly marked with applicant’s name and excerpted selections.  Selections should appear as clearly identified, separate chapters on the DVD’s main menu screen.

Total length:
Video excerpts should total between 12 and 30 minutes in length.

Excerpts:
Applicants should present 3 or 4 excerpts of contrasting standard repertoire, demonstrating a variety of styles and tempi.  Complete movements are preferred.

Camera placement:
Filming should be done from the back of the orchestra, with the focus on the front of the conductor.  Emphasis should be placed on clear baton/body visibility.  Avoid excerpts that include publicity footage and/or those that do not focus almost exclusively on you as the conductor.

Microphone placement:
Place the microphone so as to record the best sound. Whenever possible, avoid placing the microphone behind the horn section or adjacent to the percussion section.

Orchestra:
Cover parts adequately. A full orchestra is not required--quintet plus piano is acceptable, but not desirable.

Note:  some programs require full or professional orchestra examples; please refer to individual applications for specific requirements.

Performance:
Footage of performances is strongly preferred to rehearsal work.  If rehearsals must be used, please feature sustained passages that do not include frequent interruptions.

Lead:
Keep the lead as short as possible; no audiovisual displays before the performance, including promotional segments.
