Fogel to Lead League as CEO

The American Symphony Orchestra League has appointed Henry Fogel as its new president and CEO, effective July 1, 2003. Fogel, who has headed the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association for eighteen years and has served as the League's board chairman since 2001, will fill the position left open with Charles Olton's retirement.

Last August, Fogel announced his decision to retire from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association at the end of the current season. In September, Olton announced that he would complete his tenure as president and CEO of the League in June 2003. A search was launched for Olton's successor, culminating in Fogel's selection. "Rather rarely in life, there are wonderful coincidences, when all the stars line up and the best result comes to pass quite naturally. This is one of those times," said Don Roth, chair of the League board's search committee and president and CEO of the Aspen Music Festival and School. "There could hardly be a more natural transition to new League leadership." Olton concurred, noting, "I've been lucky to work so closely with Henry during a remarkable period of growth for the League. I know it will continue to prosper under his guidance." Fogel, meanwhile, praised Olton's accomplishments as League president and CEO since 1997. "Chuck has strengthened the organization in so many ways," he said. "Such a solid foundation is an immense gift to his successor. I'm eager to build on the creativity and excellence that have become League hallmarks during Chuck's tenure."

Under Fogel's leadership since August 1985, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association's budget has more than tripled and its endowment has grown from $19 million to more than $160 million. The $120 million-dollar renovation and expansion of Orchestra Hall was also conceived and completed during his tenure. Fogel has served as executive director of the National Symphony Orchestra and orchestra manager of the New York Philharmonic. From 1963 to 1978, he was vice president and program director of Syracuse radio station WONO, where he conceived the first radio fund-raising marathon for an orchestra. He has since produced more than 100 radiothons for 26 different orchestras, while also hosting radio programs for Chicago station WFMT and its national radio network. Fogel has judged conducting competitions worldwide, and has served as a consultant to orchestras throughout the country.
