Animating Democracy: New Roles for Orchestras

Orchestras enable people of disparate backgrounds to come together, says League VP Polly Kahn in a recent contribution to the Animating Democracy project. The article is chock full of video excerpts illustrating orchestras’ impact on their communities, including this interview by Dallas Symphony music director Jaap van Zweden on the world premiere of a work by Conrad Tao commemorating the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s assassination.
Opportunity and Experimentation: The Current Landscape

Framing the challenges and opportunities in changing audience patterns, public perception, and organizational models, League President and CEO Jesse Rosen offers a wide-ranging take on the state of the orchestra field in his remarks to the Association of British Orchestras Convention titled New Directions for Orchestras: The USA – What’s Going On? Read the speech here.
Ivory Ban Impacts Instruments

The Obama Administration’s effort to clamp down on illegal trafficking in African elephant ivory has had immediate unintended consequences on travel with legally-crafted musical instruments, including bassoons, bows, and string instruments that contain small amounts of ivory. The League is seeking a policy solution that will address legitimate conservation concerns while also protecting the ability of musicians to travel with the essential tools of their trade, as well as providing up to date information about existing rules for travel.
New Music By African-American Composers

Works by four African-American composers were performed by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in March, via the League of American Orchestras and EarShot, the National Orchestral Composition Discovery Network. The composers -- Jonathan Bailey Holland, Erica Lindsay, Kevin Scott, and Matthew Evan Taylor -- also participated in workshops and received feedback from mentor composers Derek Bermel, Gabriela Lena Frank, Carman Moore, and Bright Sheng.
Upending Tradition - Onstage and Off

A pre-concert hike in the mountains led by a composer-geologist? A yoga class serenaded by orchestral musicians? A Dia de los Muertos concert featuring Mozart’s Requiem performed by a chorus wearing oversized skull masks? Orchestras across the country are expanding the traditional concert experience. Read about it in the Spring issue of Symphony magazine.
Orchestras Feeding America

Over 250 orchestras from across the country have collected more than 450,000 pounds of food under the League’s yearly Orchestras Feeding America program. Hear local perspectives from two member orchestras: Springfield Symphony Orchestra, in this video posted on YouTube, above, and Valdosta Symphony Orchestra, in a news article linked here.
League’s National Conference to Focus on Innovation, June 4-6 in Seattle
Nearly 1,000 professionals and volunteers from across the orchestra field are expected to attend. Keynote speakers include MacArthur Award-winning flutist, founder of ICE, and prominent representative of the new generation of young entrepreneurial musicians, Claire Chase, and arts researcher Alan Brown, principal, WolfBrown. Register here.
Did you know… The Kansas City Symphony made unprecedented use of Google Glass recently when it released two videos giving viewers a first-person perspective of what it feels to perform in an orchestra. Three musicians and Music Director Michael Stern wore the devices. Read more here.

Seattle Conference: Vital Sessions / Viral Video

Nearly 1,000 orchestra administrators, musicians, volunteers, and board members attended the League's National Conference in Seattle last month. WolfBrown Principal Alan Brown's closing session keynote challenged orchestras to re-imagine the presentation of arts programs in ways that will engage new listeners, while host orchestra Seattle Symphony stirred things up with two concerts, three world premieres, and Sir Mix-A-Lot's now-famous orchestral rendition of "Baby Got Back." Experience Conference highlights here.
The Definition of Orchestra: 'A Dancing Place'

In her riveting Conference keynote address, flutist Claire Chase recounted the early days of ICE (International Contemporary Ensemble), the musical group she founded, and shared her vision of orchestras: "The word 'orchestra,' in ancient Greece, meant 'a dancing place.' What if orchestras of the 21st century could revisit this most ancient part of their stories and be, literally, an open space? ...a space that houses musicians not as interpreters but as catalysts for change; that inspires administrators to be alchemists, synergists; and welcomes audience members not as consumers but as participants..." Watch here.
State of the Field: A Conversation with Jesse Rosen

Optimism, recovery, innovation, experimentation – these themes were abundant at the League's National Conference and are explored in a conversation between arts reporter Michael Upchurch, of the Seattle Times, and Jesse Rosen, president and CEO of the League. Here is a link to Rosen's Seattle Times interview. His Conference speech – articulating how a sense of place is central to the evolution of orchestras - is now available to read or watch.
You're Invited: A Seat at the Policy Table

If you're not at the table, you're on the menu. So goes the saying inside the D.C. beltway, where a startling array of issues are being considered that will impact the capacity of orchestras to serve their communities. Have you made your voice heard on charitable giving incentives, funding for the NEA and arts education, and policies that will determine how and whether musicians can use their instruments? Arts advocates can and should participate in policy conversations that shape their future. The League provides everything you need to speak up.
Fired Up in the Board Room

Symphony, the League's award-winning magazine, debuts Board Room, a new column featuring topics essential to orchestra board effectiveness. In this issue: an excerpt from Susan Howlett's Boards on Fire! Inspiring Leaders to Raise Money Joyfully. A leading consultant on nonprofit governance, Howlett spoke to a packed session at Conference on helping trustees meet their fiduciary responsibilities. Read the column here.
Did you know?.ASCAP and the League present ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming to orchestras for programs that challenge audiences, build repertoire, and increase interest in music of our time. See the full list of 2013/14 awardees here.

2012-13 Premieres List by Composer

Each summer, Symphony compiles a list of world, U.S., and Canadian premieres scheduled for the upcoming season.

The list includes names of the works, the orchestras premiering them, scheduled premiere dates, conductors, commissioning parties, and soloists. Titles and names not provided by the orchestras in the survey are designated TBA. The list is compiled based on responses to a League of American Orchestras survey and is not meant to be comprehensive.

A go-to source for information on upcoming premieres, the list demonstrates the artistic vitality of orchestras across the continent, and serves as an invaluable tool for press and orchestra professionals alike. Please contact Symphony Assistant Editor Ian VanderMeulen (This email address is being protected from spambots. 2012-13 Premieres List

Who Needs Orchestras? VHS/DVD Package

Explore critical issues facing your orchestra with the help of a thought-provoking League video and discussion guide. The League 2004 National Conference opened with the seminar entitled Who Needs Orchestras? Produced in partnership with the Fred Friendly Seminars of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, the session framed questions to reflect the challenges orchestras face today.

Now, continue the discussion at your orchestra with the help of the session video and discussion guide. The discussion materials put you in the position of a panelist, and a series of questions help you reflect on issues specific to your own orchestra, and to come up with your own answers. Use this video package to explore your challenges, and to stimulate your own response not only to the larger question, "Who needs orchestras?" but also to the questions, "Who needs our orchestra, why is it a necessary resource for our community, and what do we need to do to earn and grow community trust and investment?"
