Directing a youth orchestra, whether from the administrative or artistic side, involves all the skills necessary for management of an adult orchestra, and then some. This seminar will explore the areas of leadership, programming, recruitment, retention, working with parents and adolescents, fundraising, maximizing rehearsal time, and much more. An executive director/music director/general manger team will work with participants from both the administrative and artistic constituencies to help insure that our youth orchestras are run on the highest professional level, while retaining the excitement, passion, and spontaneity unique to the population they serve. Problem solving and expanded thinking will play major roles in this seminar. Small group work will give participants the opportunity to collaborate with peers from diverse organizations and backgrounds. This seminar is open to all interested in the youth orchestra, whether they are experienced professionals or new entrants to this aspect of the profession.
