Bozeman Symphony—RUSH tickets

Pick up RUSH symphony tickets a day ahead of the concert.

The Background—From Singles to Doubles:

The Bozeman Symphony, prior to their move to doubles, had been selling $3-5 tickets to their dress rehearsal in an effort to make the symphony accessible to families with young children. To continue this tradition after the move to doubles, the symphony began offering $50 passes to families, allowing children of any age and families of any size access to a full season of dress rehearsals.

Bozeman also began the RUSH tickets as an incentive for dress rehearsal attendees to switch attendance into the weekend subscription concerts. These inexpensive tickets were aimed at the local student population, as well as families with young children. RUSH tickets have been available since the 2002-03 season.

How it works:

  • Tickets are $5.
  • Tickets are available at three places in the town of Bozeman: a music store, the Montana State University student union, and a downtown store front.
  • Volunteers manage the ticket sales at these locations.
  • Tickets are sold on Fridays from 4-6 p.m.
  • After 6 p.m. the unsold tickets return to normal price at the box office.
  • RUSH purchasers cannot select a seat; they can only accept what the box office provides

Results:

Bozeman sells an average of 150 RUSH tickets per concert weekend. On Saturday, the RUSH tickets take a nearly full house to a capacity crowd. While the Sunday audience is not as full, the RUSH tickets still fill seats. The inexpensive tickets are not counted as a main source of revenue. However, a full concert hall is worth more than just monetary value, and is important to both the musicians and the audience. The Bozeman Symphony values the extra seats being filled with this program. The RUSH tickets are used mostly by students and last-minute planners. Because the majority of patrons enjoy the security of reserved seating, there is no evidence of regular subscribers switching to RUSH tickets.
