Board of Directors Self Assessment Tool

The League of American Orchestras is pleased to make available a new, customized online board self-assessment tool created in partnership with BoardSource.  The Board of Directors Self-Assessment Tool is designed to address issues of importance unique to orchestra boards.

When properly conducted, a board self-assessment tool offers both tangible and intangible benefits to the participating board members, the executive director, the orchestra they govern and assist, and, ultimately, the audiences and communities the orchestra serves.

Catherine Moye, Former Board President, Spokane Symphony Orchestra, comments on the Board Self-Assessment Tool.

Once an orchestra board decides to undertake this process, they begin working with BoardSource to implement the survey. The online format is key to the assessment process, allowing questions to be distributed quickly via e-mail. The format allows board members to save their work and complete the survey at a later date, if they so choose.  In addition to administering the survey, BoardSource, gathers and tabulates the results, then formats the responses into an easy-to-read, ready-to-distribute report.

The initial survey should take board members approximately 30-60 minutes to complete. To encourage candor, all responses will be confidential and aggregated before the results are distributed to the orchestra board.
