League Presentation 1  Turning First-Timers into Life Timers: Understanding and Reducing Churn

Presenters: representatives of Oliver Wyman and the orchestras that have participated in the study (TBC) 

This is plenary session for Executive Directors, General Managers, Operations Managers, Marketing, Public Relations, Development, Trustees, Conductors, and Artistic Administrators, as it represents important new research with significant implications for all of these constituencies.  It will consist of a 30’ presentation followed by a table discussion and Q&A session in a mixed group.  

Orchestras have known that long-term audience members are incredibly loyal and generous. We’ve tended to believe that our challenge lies in attracting newcomers to our institutions. Research now shows that while we attract significant numbers of newcomers, we are not effective in converting them to longer-term customers and supporters. We now know that first-timers make up almost 50% of our customers annually, but more than 80% of them do not purchase tickets again for the following season.  In partnership with the consulting firm Oliver Wyman, nine senior orchestra marketing professionals have been studying this “churn” in and out of the orchestra audience. This presentation brings forward the results of this multi-million dollar pro-bono study to help us better understand this phenomenon, helping to minimize the impact of churn, and developing strategy that will enable us to retain more of our new customers.

For those in the know, the Luncheon is one of the “places you need to be” during Conference.  It’s where you’ll find out what’s happening at the League and, more importantly, what the League is doing for the field.

It’s not just lunch.  Aside from being a chance to sit down with colleagues in a convivial atmosphere—the event also comprises the League’s Annual Meeting, where you’ll be able to put our work in a greater context.

This is a shared session for Executive Directors, General Managers and Operations Managers of Groups 1-4.

Joe Kluger and Michael Bronson, electronic media consultants, have just completed an electronic media survey (this is the most comprehensive survey of electronic media activity in orchestras ever undertaken). They will present their findings and discuss the implications for all our orchestras, across the full range of budget sizes. The session will be organized by budget size for exec directors and GMs, so that after the presentation, there can be discussion by group size/constituency.

This session is open to all General Managers and Operations Managers but may be of particular interest to those in Groups 1 and 2. 

  • Touring is an expensive proposition, one that very few orchestras can afford to undertake on a regular basis. A discussion about why orchestras tour and how it helps them back home might help a lot of managers who are struggling with their Boards and funding communities about financially supporting touring.
  • Getting contributed support for touring is essential to making a tour not create a negative impact on your budget. Something about how tour planning can be structured to help the organization find contributed revenue for touring might also be helpful.
  • Lastly, planning a tour is an arduous task. Some orchestras use outside companies to assist with logistical details and execution on the road. A discussion on the pros and cons of using these companies might also be helpful to some, particularly if representatives from a few could come to part of the session.

A 21ST CENTURY TOWN MEETING WITH AMERICASPEAKS CONCLUSIONS AND CONCLUDING SESSION

The ideas that surface at the caucuses the previous three days will be addressed at Saturday morning's 21st Century Town Meeting. Using the latest technologies, topics will be consolidated, discussed and voted upon by thousands of your peers, each with an individual touch pad.  Results will be projected on large video screens in order to identify and hone an agenda to be ratified by this newly unified performing arts community.
