Internships offer you an inside look at the work of orchestras. The experience you will gain and the references and professional networking internships provide are often a key element in getting your first job.
1. Many different departments offer internships including marketing, box office, development and education. Internships can be for a few weeks or several months. Some internships are paid, some are volunteer. If you are presently in college or graduate school, you may be able to earn credit for your internship work.
2. Start your search for an internship early as available positions fill up quickly.
3. Many orchestras and summer music festivals list their internship with the League. Available internships are listed under the "Internship" heading on the menu to the left (by state).
4. For other options, review the job listings on the website of the orchestra(s) in your city or state. To locate your orchestra(s), use the League member orchestra list.
5. If you know of an orchestra where you would like to have an internship—either during the year or during the summer—contact them directly. The HR Director often oversees the internship program and so direct your inquiry to this office. If there is no HR office, contact the office of the Executive Director.
6. Use the Web and sites such as VolunteerMatch.org , Idealist.org and LinkedIn.com for additional internship possibilities.
