Building career awareness ideas for College students and Adults
- Create an Orchestra Job Fair & Career Day
Learn about job and volunteer opportunities within the orchestra. Invite college, graduate school students, career changers, career transitioners. Panel to discuss different positions and responsibilities within the orchestra. Meet/interview participants, review their resume, and offer career guidance/next steps. Provide information on internship and volunteer opportunities
- Informational Interviews
Offer students, career changers, to meet with administrative staff. Promote through the orchestra job opportunities page, local area college Career Office, Alumni Office, college newsletter/newspaper; Arts & Business council newsletter.
- Job A-likes Program
Invite college/grad students who work in their college offices in parallel positions—e.g., Development, Marketing, PR, Operations-- to visit for a day and shadow their counterpart within the orchestra staff. Provide opportunity to discuss differences, commonality.
- Create “My Job Journal/Blog” on website
Administrative staff member to be featured each week in addition to orchestra musician blog. Journals/blogs could be archived on the site to create an encyclopedia of job descriptions and opportunities.
- Create a Careers Speakers Bureau
Contact local college/conservatory/university career offices and offer to provide professional staff to serve on Career Panels; speak at Career Development class; speak to alumni groups; and/or participate in non-profit career and job fairs. Suggested handout materials: job descriptions of entire orchestra staff, range of volunteer opportunities and internships with orchestra.
