FY2000 NEA Grants to Orchestras

The NEA awarded 96 grants to orchestras in fiscal year 2000, totaling $3,117,000. Awards to all arts disciplines through the categories of Creation & Presentation (announced in December 1999) and in the categories of Education, Access, and Heritage & Preservation (announced in April 2000), numbered 1,369, and totaled $31.3 million.

Of the $97.6 million appropriated to the NEA in FY2000, $79.5 million were avialable for grantmaking purposes. In addition to the grants awarded through the categories of Education, Access, Heritage & Preservation, and Creation & Presentaion, FY2000 awards included the following:

  • Seventy grants totaling $2.2 million were awarded for "services to the field" - projects that provide broad support for constituencies of artists and arts organizations. Two grants were awarded for service to the orchestra field: $20,000 to the American Music Center, and $165,000 to the American Symphony Orchestra League.
  • Congress requires that 40% of NEA grant funds be made available directly to the states; $33.3 million were awarded through Partnership Agreements to state and regional arts agencies.
  • $2.5 million has been awarded for Leadership Initiatives.
  • $820,000 has been distributed for Literary Fellowships.
