Grants Now Available: NEA Announces Stimulus Guidelines (03/03/09)

Washington, D.C. - Orchestras that have received a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant within the past four years may be eligible to apply for funding from the NEA to help stabilize local economies.  The NEA has just announced grant guidelines and an application deadline of April 2, 2009 for arts organizations applying for NEA funding provided in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  These critical funds will be available as non-matching one-time grants of $25,000 or $50,000 for projects that focus on the preservation of jobs in the arts.

Projects are limited to:

  • Salary support, full or partial, for one or more positions that are critical to an organization's artistic mission and that are in jeopardy or have been eliminated as a result of the current economic climate.

And/or

  • Fees for previously engaged artists and/or contractual personnel to maintain or expand the period during which such persons would be engaged.

Orchestras may apply for a Recovery and Reinvestment grant in addition to an application for NEA funding under the traditional Grant for Arts Projects categories.  Applicants can only receive NEA American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds from one source -- either from the NEA directly, or directly through an entity eligible to subgrant NEA funds, such as a local, regional, or state arts agency.
Complete information about the grant guidelines and reporting requirements, as well as a very helpful FAQ, are available on the NEA web site.  Note that development costs are not eligible – because these are non-matching grants, if any unallowable costs are included in the budget, the whole grant will be ineligible. Applications will undergo panel review and, in keeping with the goals of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, funds will be made available quickly in order to spark immediate economic relief.  Your application must be received by the Grants.gov system no later than 11:59 p.m., Eastern Time, on April 2, 2009 and funded projects may begin on or after July 1, 2009.
